Not since Norm did his part to keep Cheers afloat has someone gotten away with racking up such a ludicrous bar tab.

Back in 2010, a 16-year-old boy in Kyoto, Japan, along with some friends, took his father’s credit card and used it to buy $54,000 worth of alcohol at various hotspots in the course of one what-must-have-been crazy night. He slapped the American Express card down for such high-end fare as whiskey and wine that fetched as much as $3,700 per bottle.

What’s even more amazing is that a court ruled neither the boy nor his father will have to pay the tab back. That faint sound you hear from halfway around the world is both father and son letting out a sigh of relief bigger than the bill itself.

A judge said the bars and American Express were the ones ultimately responsible for the incident and will have to eat the charges. The father will still have to pay about $800, which is such a victory they ought to treat themselves to a bottle of the finest champagne to celebrate.

You can bet the son can help arrange that.
