Matt Cain pitched his second series-clinching game of the postseason, and the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-0, in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series on Monday night at AT&T Park. The Giants won their record-tying sixth elimination game of the postseason to advance to their second World Series in three years. They defeated the defending World Series champion-Cardinals three consecutive times after falling behind 3 games to 1 in the series.

Hunter Pence hit a broken-bat, two-run double in San Francisco's five-run third inning, as the Giants continued their domination of St. Louis in the latter half of the NLCS.The Cardinals scored just one run in the final three games of the series. Giants' second baseman Marco Scutaro was named the Most Valuable Player of the NLCS after collecting a record 14 hits in the series, including three on Monday night. He hit .500 for the series.

Giants' closer Sergio Romo came on to record the final out in a heavy, steady rain, as Matt Holliday popped out to Marco Scutaro to end the game, the series and the Cardinals' season. San Francisco will now host the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday. The American League champion-Tigers have been idle since completing a sweep of the Yankees in the ALCS last Thursday.
